What Is the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program?

The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program is a nationally recognized foundation training and socialization program created by the American Kennel Club. S.T.A.R. stands for Socialization, Training, Activity, and Responsibility.

Friendly behavior toward people and puppies
Allows handling (ears, feet, grooming)
Walking on a leash
Sitting and lying down on command
Coming when called
Brief separation from the owner

Passing the exam allows owners to apply for the official AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy certificate and is the first step toward the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title.

Basic Manners
Sit, down, come, leash walking, and confidence‑building exercises.
Socialization
Safe interactions with people and other puppies in a controlled environment.
AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Exam
Includes the nationally recognized AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy evaluation.
